Why Beechwood Lodge was the perfect base for exploring North Wales

For a recent short getaway, we decided to head north — about 180 miles from home in Cardiff — for a short break in North Wales. With a young family in tow and a car packed with snacks, scooters and the essentials, our mission was simple: find a base that’s convenient, comfortable, and close to the action.

We homed in on the Bethesda area, ideally positioned for several of the attractions on our family hit list — including the Welsh Mountain Zoo, Greenwood Family Park, and a steam train ride from Porthmadog. Add to that a planned stop in Llandudno and a drive through Betws-y-Coed (which we’ve previously reviewed here), and we needed somewhere with good road links, but also somewhere that felt like a bit of a retreat.

The Lodge Life: Finding The Beechwood

Accommodation around Bethesda is a bit thin on the ground if you’re after a family-friendly, self-catered stay that’s somewhere between “rural escape” and “still has phone signal”. We struck gold with The Beechwood Lodge, which we found via Airbnb (also on Booking.com and available direct).

Set within the Ogwen Bank Caravan and Lodge Park on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, it ticked all the boxes:

    • Sleeps 4: One double and one twin room, perfect for our family of four.

    • Open-plan living: Kitchen, lounge, and dining space all in one airy layout.

    • Home comforts: Central heating, double glazing, a proper dishwasher, washing machine and even a microwave — ideal for a ‘self-catering-ish’ setup.

    • Added luxury: A private hot tub on the large balcony, perfect for unwinding after a long day of activities (or sitting in silence after bedtime routines… bliss).

We paid £950 for Tuesday–Saturday over a school half-term. Not the cheapest, but for a stay that feels more like a lodge than a caravan — with more space, better furnishings and thoughtful design — it offered decent value for money.

    Location, Location (and Zip World)

The Beechwood is really well located. It’s about:

    • 10 minutes to Snowdonia

    • 20 minutes to Bangor Pier

    • 40–45 minutes to Llandudno

    • A short hop to Zip World Penrhyn Quarry, if you’re feeling brave…

It’s right off the A5, which meant easy access for day trips and scenic drives. We popped to Bangor’s Asda at the start of the trip to stock up, which was handy for self-catering needs.

    What’s It Really Like?

This is definitely a level up from a typical caravan park stay — more like a larger modern cabin. The clever use of space inside the lodge meant we never felt cramped, and while the outdoor area lacked privacy (and no BBQs are allowed), it wasn’t a dealbreaker.

There’s a small restaurant and bar on-site if you don’t fancy cooking. Reviews had warned us to bring things like oven gloves, tea towels, and even loo roll — but we found most things were there already. Still, worth packing extras just in case.

    Final Thoughts

If you’re planning a family trip to North Wales and want to be close to everything without sacrificing your creature comforts, The Beechwood Lodge at Ogwen Bank is a worthy pit stop. Easy road access, great location for days out, and a hot tub to ease those post-adventure legs — what’s not to like?

    Would we go again? Absolutely.
