Imagine a road where every turn unveils a new breathtaking view, where the tarmac twists and flows like a ribbon through the heart of the Brecon Beacons. The Black Mountain Pass isn’t just a drive; it’s an experience—one that has captivated petrolheads, bikers, and road-trippers for generations. Whether you’re seeking the thrill of perfectly cambered bends or simply a scenic escape from the everyday, this legendary Welsh route promises an unforgettable journey.

With a speed limit capped at 40 mph, this road isn’t about high-speed thrills—it’s about precision, control, and fully immersing yourself in the experience. Every sweeping corner and tight hairpin is an invitation to enjoy the drive, not rush through it. The Black Mountain Pass rewards those who take their time, allowing them to absorb the stunning scenery and relish each perfectly engineered curve.

    The Iconic Black Mountain Pass

The Black Mountain Pass, or the A4069 as it’s officially known, is one of Wales’ most iconic driving routes. Spanning approximately 19.9 miles between Llandovery and Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen, this picturesque journey takes around 40 minutes, offering a blend of stunning landscapes, challenging hairpins, and thrilling stretches of road.

    Starting Point: South to North

Our preferred way to experience the Black Mountain Pass is to drive from south to north, beginning in Llandovery and ending in Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen. This direction not only provides an exhilarating approach to the infamous hairpin bends but also frames the breathtaking views in the most dramatic way.

    Black Mountain Pass

Starting in Llandovery, a charming market town rich in history, you’ll quickly leave the hustle and bustle behind as the road winds into the mountains. The moment you hit the first incline, you’ll realise why this drive is so special—sweeping bends, open stretches, and panoramic vistas that seem to go on forever.

    A Road Made Famous

The Black Mountain Pass rose to international fame thanks to its frequent appearances on Top Gear. Jeremy Clarkson famously tested high-performance cars here, showcasing the road’s thrilling bends and epic backdrops. As a result, it has become a bucket-list destination for petrolheads and motorcyclists alike. However, even if you’re not a driving enthusiast, the scenery alone is worth the journey.

    Must-Stop Locations

The drive itself is exhilarating, but taking time to pause and appreciate the area will make it even more memorable. Here are some must-stop locations along the way:

Mountain Road Car Park: This is a great place for a quick stop to take in the vast landscapes around you. Whether it’s a crisp winter morning or a golden summer evening, the views here are spectacular.

    Black Mountain Quarries

Black Mountain Quarries (SA19 9PE): Arguably offering the best viewpoint on the route, this stop allows you to park up and fully appreciate the sheer scale of the mountains. If you’re feeling adventurous, a simple walking route from here provides even more stunning vistas.

    Carreg Cennen Castle

Carreg Cennen Castle: A short detour off the pass, this historic castle is well worth a visit. Park up and take a short walk to one of the most dramatically positioned castles in Wales. The views from here are just as impressive as those along the pass itself.

    Llandeilo

Llandeilo: If you’re looking for a proper break with some great food and boutique shops, Llandeilo is the perfect pit stop. Check out our full guide to Llandeilo as a stop-off destination here.

    A Drive with a Challenge

In recent years, average speed cameras have been installed along parts of the Black Mountain Pass, following concerns about safety. These cameras have sparked some controversy and have even been the target of vandalism. While they may temper the thrill of speed for some drivers, they serve as a reminder to enjoy the route responsibly and take in the scenery without rushing.

If you’re here purely for the love of driving, there’s no need to exceed the limit—this road is best enjoyed at a steady, controlled pace. Take your time, let the bends flow naturally, and you’ll appreciate the experience all the more.

    Make It a Day Out

While the Black Mountain Pass can be completed in under an hour, it’s far more enjoyable to make a day of it. With so much to see and do in the surrounding areas, consider extending your trip by:

    • Exploring nearby hiking trails
    • Stopping for a leisurely picnic with a view
    • Visiting some of the charming villages along the way for a coffee or a meal
    • Photographing the landscape from different angles

    Tips for the Road

    • Plan Your Stops: There’s so much to see, so make a rough plan of where you’d like to pause along the way.
    • Pack Essentials: Bring water, snacks, and a camera—you’ll want to capture the stunning landscapes.
    • Drive Safely: Respect the speed limits and other road users, especially on narrow or winding sections.
    • Check the Weather: Conditions can change quickly in the mountains, so be prepared for everything from bright sunshine to sudden mist and rain.

Driving the Black Mountain Pass is an unforgettable experience—whether you’re there for the thrill of the open road or simply to soak in the Welsh scenery. From the dramatic hairpins to the endless horizons, this is a journey that stays with you long after the engine is switched off.

So, fuel up, take your time, and enjoy one of Wales’ greatest driving roads.
