This weekend (11th – 13th October 2024), the Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre is buzzing with excitement as it hosts the Everything Electric South 2024 event. As an EV owner myself—driving a Tesla Model 3 Performance—I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to check out what’s new and what’s coming to market in 2025. Whether you’re an EV enthusiast, a sustainable tech lover, or just curious about the future of green energy, this event has it all.
While this isn’t a full review, I’ve summarised our initial impressions of the EVs we had the chance to drive today. All the models tested offered a respectable range, with prices ranging from approximately £25,665 to £67,000. Each vehicle seems to cater to a distinct audience, and I’ve shared my thoughts on who I believe each car would suit best. Tesla Model 3 (Facelift, Rear-Wheel Drive)

MG4 EV

The MG4 EV is a fantastic entry-level option for those who want an electric car without the frills. It’s designed for people who aren’t concerned with having the latest tech or luxurious interiors but need a reliable, easy-to-park vehicle that gets the job done. Ideal for city dwellers or someone looking for a simple, affordable EV to handle everyday commuting, this car prioritises practicality over premium features.
BYD Seal Excellence
For the Independent Luxury Seeker
BYD is making waves in the UK with its bold move into the EV market. The Seal Excellence is suited for those who value luxury, comfort, and high-quality materials but don’t necessarily follow the Tesla crowd. This model is for people who prioritise functionality, tech, and a premium feel but are willing to step outside of the well-known brands. If you want something that stands out with a unique mix of technology and refinement, and you don’t mind going against the grain, this is for you.
Hyundai Ioniq 6
For the Balanced EV Explorer
The Hyundai Ioniq 6 strikes a balance between practicality and premium. It’s for drivers who want more than just a basic EV but don’t need the cutting-edge tech of Tesla or BYD. Hyundai’s reputation for reliability combined with their evolving EV range makes this a great option for those who want a dependable electric car with some bells and whistles, without breaking the bank. Ideal for those who are somewhere between wanting a luxurious ride and an everyday practical EV, the Ioniq 6 is a safe and smart choice.
Test Drives: What You Need to Know
If there’s one thing you do at this event, it’s test-driving the latest electric vehicles. With brands like BYD, Hyundai, Tesla, Polestar, MG, Ford, Volvo, and Ora on display, the excitement builds quickly. But here’s the catch: test drives are booked on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you’ve got your eye on a specific model, make this your priority!
Though we arrived just before 10 am, we missed out on the highly anticipated MG Cyberster, and Polestar was fully booked too. So my advice? Head straight to the manufacturer stands located outside as soon as you arrive. Thankfully, we still managed to get behind the wheel of five other great models.
How the Test Drives Work
Each manufacturer runs their test drives differently. Some let you go solo, while others send a representative to join you. In one case, we had to follow a lead car while instructions were relayed via radio. The test drives range from 15 to 30 minutes, and the route around Farnborough airport’s grounds lets you experience the vehicles on roads with varying speed limits, from 30mph up to 60mph.
Top tip: Bring your driving licence and make sure to get your DVLA code to share your info.
Getting There
Farnborough’s a breeze to get to. We made the 129-mile trip from Cardiff to Farnborough, and our sat nav led us straight to the venue using postcode GU14 6TQ. Simply follow the signs to Gate F, where parking is free of charge. After parking up, it’s just a short walk to the venue entrance. Have your QR code ready for scanning, and you’ll be let in swiftly—don’t forget to grab your free programme on the way in.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re in it for the cars, the tech, or just the experience, Everything Electric South 2024 is a must-attend event for anyone interested in a greener, smarter future. It’s well-organised, informative, and packed with hands-on opportunities.
The test drives are a major highlight for attendees, and it’s easy to understand why. I can’t think of any other event where you can experience such a wide range of EVs in one place. It was fantastic to jump in and out of so many different models. As I’ve mentioned, each vehicle provides a unique electric driving experience—whether you’re easing into EVs with a more traditional feel like the Ford, or embracing a cutting-edge ride like the Tesla. There’s truly something for everyone.
