Rumours of a Ford Mustang saloon have been doing the rounds for years. It’s the kind of story that pops up every now and then, stirs up the motoring world, and then quietly disappears into the rumour mill once again. But this time, it might be different.
Ford has recently filed a trademark for the name ‘Mach 4’ with the US Patent and Trademark Office. Now, that might not scream Mustang saloon at first glance, but for those of us who’ve been following this story, it’s the most official move we’ve seen yet. And it’s got me wondering… are we actually going to see a four-door Ford Mustang?
The Mustang Legacy
Let’s take a step back for a moment. The Ford Mustang nameplate turned 60 last year. Sixty years of muscle car heritage. Sixty years of being the icon plastered across bedroom walls, video games, and Hollywood blockbusters. Even though they’re a rare sight on British roads, the Mustang remains a household name. It’s the kind of car people dream about – myself included.

Personally, a V8 coupe, manual gearbox, proper old-school set-up is still high on my bucket list. And I’m feeling the pressure – because it feels like we’re nearing the end of that era. With emissions regulations tightening and electric cars gaining momentum, the opportunity to own a proper, snarling, petrol-powered Mustang is shrinking.
It’s now been ten years since Ford brought the Mustang to the UK in right-hand drive. That felt like a big moment – finally, a slice of Americana available without the awkward steering wheel position. But now… things might be about to change again.
The Mach 4 Mystery
This new trademark – Mach 4 – is where things get interesting. It hints at something new, something bold. Could it be a four-door Mustang? It certainly lines up.
While the purists might scoff at the idea, a Mustang saloon actually makes a lot of sense. Saloons, by nature, tend to outsell coupes. They’re more practical, more family-friendly, and appeal to a much broader audience. And with Ford moving towards a more streamlined, electrified future, the idea of a Mustang that can double as a family car doesn’t seem all that far-fetched.
Imagine it – a V8-powered (or perhaps hybrid?) saloon with Mustang DNA. Four doors, enough boot space for the weekly shop or the pushchair, but still able to make you grin like a kid every time you blip the throttle. It sounds like the ultimate dad car – one you wouldn’t be embarrassed to park outside the school gates, but still makes the neighbours look twice.
Dreams vs Reality
I’ll be honest – these days, a coupe is a second car for me. Fun, fast, and thrilling – but not always practical. However, if Ford gave me the option to swap out the family hauler for a Mustang saloon? I’d definitely consider it. And I know I’m not alone.
There are thousands of drivers like me – grown-up petrolheads with families and responsibilities – who haven’t lost that dream. Who still remember the Mustang poster on the wall and want to keep that spark alive, even if it’s with a child seat in the back and a boot full of toys.
So… will the Mach 4 be the car that makes that dream a reality? Maybe. Maybe not. It’s still just a trademark at this stage – not a prototype, not an official confirmation. But it’s a glimmer of hope.
Let’s see how this plays out. For now, I’ll keep chasing that manual V8 coupe dream while I still can. But if Ford does build a Mustang saloon… well, I might just have to make some space on the driveway.
Would you buy one? Would a four-door Mustang be a dream come true or a step too far? Let me know in the comments.
