Pit stop paradise? Oxwich Bay Hotel is a dreamy base to explore the Gower

For those of us who live for the journey just as much as the destination, there’s nothing better than a good old-fashioned road trip—especially when it ends somewhere like this.

Tucked away on the Gower Peninsula, Oxwich Bay Hotel isn’t just a seaside escape; it’s the perfect stopover for petrolheads looking to stretch their legs, breathe in some sea air, and explore some of the most scenic (and twisty) coastal roads in South Wales.

    Pull Up, Switch Off

Let’s get the essentials out of the way first: parking is easy and plentiful. Whether you’re rocking up in a hot hatch, EV, or towing something behind, there’s space right outside your accommodation—and more back at the main hotel if needed. No stress, no faff, no tight underground ramps to worry about.

    The Mini Clubman

We stayed in one of the family caravans at Beach Walk Parc, just a stone’s throw from the golden sands of Oxwich Bay. You can literally park up and walk straight onto the beach. Think of it as your own private pit lane to paradise.

    Driving in the Gower

Oxwich is ideally placed for exploring the Gower Peninsula, and believe us—this area is a driver’s dream. The road down to the bay is a proper twisty treat, the kind that makes you smile and grip the wheel just a little tighter. Sure, the abundance of 40, 30, and even 20mph zones might feel like overkill at first, but slow driving somehow suits the area. These aren’t roads to blitz—they’re roads to savour.

    Oxwich Bay

The Gower itself feels like it goes on forever. Wide open views, coastal climbs, and woodland drops—it’s hard to believe this is all within an hour of Cardiff. And when you’re done driving, Oxwich Bay is the perfect place to recharge.

Caravans, But Not As You Know Them

The Beach Walk Parc caravans are modern, clean, and genuinely cosy. Ours had comfy beds, a solid power shower, central heating, and space for up to eight—plus a little kitchenette to rustle up a brew or breakfast before heading out on your next drive. It’s all serviced daily too, so no chores needed.

    The Oxwich Bay Hotel

Even better? You can keep your car right next to your van. No hauling bags across muddy fields or faffing about with codes and barriers.

Things to Do (When You’re Not Driving)

    Thee Cliffs Bay

From wildlife spotting at Oxwich National Nature Reserve to clifftop walks and beach races with the kids, there’s plenty to do once you’re out of the driver’s seat. We took a wander to Three Cliffs Bay, which gave us proper Goonies vibes—dramatic, rugged, and a little bit wild.

Garden cafe bar at the Oxwich Bay Hotel

Back at base, the Cafe Garden Bar serves up burgers and chips with a beachfront view that makes every bite taste better. On Sundays, you can tuck into a full roast, and if you fancy something lighter, High Tea by the Sea delivers Welsh cakes, warm scones, and finger sandwiches right by the waves.

    Clubman Conundrums

Now, let’s talk about the car—our trusty Mini Clubman JCW. It’s been the ideal mix of fun and functionality, with enough poke for those winding Gower roads and just enough boot space for a couple of nights away.

But as the family expands, so do the demands. This trip had us seriously questioning whether the Clubman is still up to the task. Three kids squeezed across the back, two adults up front, and a boot packed to bursting—and we didn’t even bring much food, thanks to the hotel being on the doorstep. That did mean leaving behind bodyboards and beach toys though, which felt like a missed opportunity with the beach so close.

    The Mini Clubman

I’ve had my wife nudging me all weekend with the classic question: “So… what are we going to do when we need more space?” And honestly, she’s got a point. Maybe it’s time to start thinking about an upgrade. Something with a bit more room, but without sacrificing that driving joy we’ve come to love.

    Weekend Verdict

Clubman aside, if you’re looking for a no-fuss, family-friendly base for exploring the Gower—with the added bonus of proper parking, easy access, and roads worth travelling for—Oxwich Bay Hotel and Beach Walk Parc deliver the goods.

It’s a proper pit stop staycation that lets you unwind without sacrificing what we all love: a decent drive.

Would we go back? 100%, but perhaps we’ll do it in a different car.
