From today, the UK Government has expanded the Electric Car Grant (ECG) with six new electric models added, bringing the total eligible vehicles to 28. The scheme offers two levels of discount — £3,750 (Band 1) and £1,500(Band 2), depending on the sustainability of the vehicle’s manufacturing process.

    What’s new?

    The latest additions include:

    • Ford Puma Gen‑E – eligible for the maximum £3,750 Band 1 discount

    • Ford E‑Tourneo Courier – also entitled to the full £3,750 grant

    • Peugeot E‑308 – receives £1,500 (Band 2)

    • Peugeot E‑408 – receives £1,500

    • DS DS 3 – receives £1,500

    • DS Nº4 – receives £1,500

The ECG is part of the Government’s wider £650 million investment to make EV ownership cheaper and accelerate adoption across the UK, boosting economic growth and securing jobs in the automotive sector.

    Why this matters

Industry organisations and commentators have been vocal in their support:

    • Autotrader reports that ECG eligibility has driven up interest in EVs by up to 80%, especially in models under £37,000.

    • AA President Edmund King remarked that the £3,750 discount may “just bridge the financial gap” for many buyers.

    • NFDA Chief Executive Sue Robinson highlighted that including models such as the Ford Puma Gen‑E at the maximum discount is a “significant step in helping more drivers make the switch”.

Summary table: Eligible EVs Under the ECG

Grant Level Eligible Models (Selected Highlights)
    £3,750 (Band 1) Ford Puma Gen‑E · Ford E‑Tourneo Courier
    £1,500 (Band 2) Citroën ë‑C3, ë‑C4, ë‑C5 Aircross, ë‑Berlingo · Cupra Born · DS 3, Nº4 · Nissan Ariya, Micra · Peugeot E‑208, E‑2008, E‑308, E‑408, E‑Rifter · Renault 4, 5, Alpine A290, Megane, Scenic · Vauxhall Astra Electric, Combo Life Electric, Corsa Electric, Frontera Electric, Grandland Electric, Mokka Electric · Volkswagen ID.3

    What to watch next

    • More models are expected to be approved as manufacturers apply and meet the ECG’s sustainability benchmarks.

    • Buyers should act swiftly, as the ECG runs through to 2028–29, but funding could be exhausted sooner.

    • Be sure trim-levels or optional extras don’t push a vehicle over the £37,000 price cap, rendering it ineligible—even if the base model qualifies.

This expansion of the Electric Car Grant marks a meaningful shift in accessibility for EV buyers across the UK. With up to £3,750 off two new Ford model, and £1,500 off a robust list of vehicles from Citroën, Peugeot, Renault and others, there’s never been a better time to go electric. Keep an eye on the official GOV.UK list for future updates—and if you’re in the market for a greener drive, this could be your moment.
