Best routes into a career in the UK automotive sector

It’s been a big week for students across the UK. A-Level results day has just been and gone, GCSE results are landing next week, and for a lot of people, that means one big question: What’s next?

If you’ve ever been the sort of person who notices a car’s exhaust note before its colour, spends hours tinkering with something under the bonnet, or gets genuinely excited about race day, maybe now’s the time to think about whether your future could be in the automotive industry.

Spoiler alert! In 2025, the answer is a big, loud, tyre-squealing yes.

The industry isn’t what it used to be (and that’s a good thing)

The automotive world is shifting gears faster than a pro rally driver. Sure, we still need great mechanics and garage gurus, but we also need people working on electric vehicle tech, data for connected cars, green transport solutions, and even digital customer experience.

The IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry) reckons more than 55,000 new jobs will be created in the UK by 2030. That’s not just spanners and socket sets, we’re talking roles in EV development, sustainability, autonomous vehicles, and high-tech diagnostics.

There’s more than one way to get in the driver’s seat

The beauty of the motor industry is that it’s not one-size-fits-all. You can take a path that works for you, whether you’re more comfortable learning by doing, hitting the books, or mixing the two:

    • Apprenticeships – Earn while you learn, get your hands dirty from day one.

    • College technical courses – A mix of workshop time and classroom know-how.

    • Uni degrees and grad schemes – Perfect if you want to deep-dive into engineering, sustainability, or business.

    • IMI-accredited qualifications – Recognised everywhere, helping you get a foot in the door (and a hand on the wheel).

The best bit? Your exam results don’t have to define you. Whether your grades are exactly what you hoped for or not quite what you expected, there’s still a way to get into the industry.

You don’t have to be a mechanic to work with cars

Some of the coolest roles out there aren’t even under the bonnet. You could be a data analyst for connected cars, an EV specialist helping to shape the green transport revolution, or a customer experience manager making sure people drive away with a grin.

The industry is looking for people who are curious, adaptable, and ready to embrace change. If you’ve got the drive (pun fully intended), there’s a place for you.

    Ready to start the engine?

If A-Level or GCSE results have you thinking about your next move, the automotive industry is wide open and waiting for new talent.

The IMI can help you figure out your route, no matter where you’re starting from. Check out www.moretomotor.org.uk and start plotting your journey.
