Top Car Picks for Under £5,000 for Some Spring Fun in 2025

With winter (hopefully) on its way out, March welcomes the start of spring. The days are getting longer, the weather is improving (we hope), and you might be thinking about treating yourself to a car that makes the most of the sunshine. Something fun, something with a bit of character, and of course, something that won’t break the bank.

If you’re looking for a car to enjoy the spring and summer months, a convertible is the way to go. The wind in your hair, a couple of B-road blasts, but also comfortable enough for some motorway cruising. It needs to be big enough for a weekend getaway but doesn’t need to be a powerhouse—this is about driving enjoyment, not setting speed records. And since it’s a seasonal purchase for many, you probably don’t want to spend a fortune or be burdened with high maintenance costs.

    Criteria:

    • Up to £5,000
    • Convertible
    • 300-500L boot space (because you need room for a bag or two!)
    • Decent performance, but not extreme
    • Reliable with a solid service history

Here are three of the best options currently available:

    Mercedes-Benz SLK (2012) – £3,995

    Mercedes-Benz SLK
    • Why it makes the list: A stylish, premium convertible with a hard-top roof for added practicality. The badge carries weight, and it offers a solid balance of performance and comfort.
    • Key specs:
      • Newer shape compared to earlier models
      • 6-speed manual transmission
      • 1.8-litre petrol engine
      • 0-60 mph in 7.3 seconds
      • 337L boot space
      • Cruise control for relaxed motorway miles
      • Parking sensors (but don’t expect a full 360-degree camera setup)
      • Sat-nav (but outdated, so your phone’s Google Maps is better)
      • Road tax: £255 per year

    Audi A3 Cabriolet (2011) – £4,000

    Audi A3 Cabriolet
    • Why it makes the list: The Audi A3 Cabriolet is a smart choice if you want something compact yet practical, with a touch of class and a super-low road tax bill.
    • Key specs:
      • Classic Audi styling
      • Automatic gearbox for effortless driving
      • 1.4-litre petrol engine
      • 0-60 mph in 9.1 seconds
      • 320L boot space
      • Rear seats (ideal for occasional passengers)
      • Heated leather seats for those cooler evenings
      • Parking sensors
      • Road tax: Just £35 per year!

    BMW 3 Series Convertible (2008) – £4,250

    BMW 3 Series Convertible
    • Why it makes the list: If you want a more engaging drive with the premium feel of a BMW, this one ticks all the boxes. The hard-top roof adds refinement, making it a year-round option.
    • Key specs:
      • Hard-top convertible
      • Manual gearbox
      • 2.0-litre petrol engine
      • 0-60 mph in 9.1 seconds
      • 350L boot space
      • Rear seats
      • Heated leather seats
      • Cruise control for easy long drives
      • Rear parking sensors
      • BOSE sound system for top-down music enjoyment
      • Road tax: £255 per year

    Why These Cars?

All three offer a great driving experience, decent boot space, and won’t leave you out of pocket. If you only keep it for a single season, you won’t lose much money either. The Mercedes offers prestige, the Audi is the most affordable to run, and the BMW delivers the most engaging drive.

If you want to explore more options, you could also consider the Volvo C70, Peugeot 207 CC, or 307 CC. However, if you’re looking for fun and badge appeal, you’re better off sticking with the BMW, Mercedes, or Audi.

Don’t Forget to Check the History!

Before buying any used car, it’s crucial to check its history. A CarVertical report can reveal any hidden past, including:

    • Outstanding finance (you don’t want to end up paying someone else’s debt!)
    • Accident damage (including write-offs)
    • MOT history (to spot any recurring issues)
    • Mileage discrepancies (to avoid clocked cars)

Spending a little extra to do a history check could save you thousands in the long run. Get your report here.

    Final Thoughts

Spring and summer are the perfect seasons to enjoy top-down motoring, and you don’t need to spend a fortune to do it. With these picks, you’ll have a car that’s fun, stylish, and reliable—all without breaking the bank.
