The best view of Cardiff Bay every petrolhead should know about

Petrolheads love to swap stories about breathtaking viewpoints and epic driving roads, often tucked away on remote B-roads miles from city life. But what if I told you there’s a fantastic spot just a stone’s throw from Cardiff’s city centre?

    Cardiff Bay

Located in Penarth, Paget Road is only three miles south of the city, there’s a hidden gem offering jaw-dropping views of Cardiff Bay. This isn’t your usual winding driving road; instead, it’s a perfect spot to park up, take in the scenery, and snap a few photos of your pride and joy with an incredible backdrop.

If you’ve not been, chances are you’ve seen the view in photos—it’s iconic. The road boasts unrestricted parking, so there are plenty of places to pull over and enjoy the moment. However, a word of caution for anyone with a lowered car: the nearby side streets are peppered with speed bumps, and some of them can be quite unforgiving.

For lowered cars, consider parking at the bottom of the hill near the Cardiff Bay Barrage and walking up instead. It’s a short walk, and on a sunny day, you can make the most of it by exploring Penarth Marina or taking a stroll across the barrage.

    Finding the viewpoint

The road in question is Paget Road in Penarth, accessible via Penarth Portway or Plassey Street. Be aware that both routes feature speed humps.

Have you got a favourite viewpoint or scenic spot? I’d love to hear about it! Drop a comment below or share your suggestions with me on Instagram @drivenbyrhys.
