Supercar Ownership: The Unexpected Fixes & Mods I Didn’t See Coming

A full month into owning the BMW i8, and I’m already itching to see what I can do to enhance it—and maybe tackle some necessary repairs.

If you’ve read my three-week ownership blog (here), you’ll recall my first impressions—from boot space to ingress and egress challenges. I briefly mentioned some niggles and my temptation to upgrade to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. While I’d still love to do that, other priorities have emerged.

Nonetheless, my decision to buy a bargain £100,000 supercar (full story here) remains unwavering. In fact, I’m determined to make this the best budget supercar money can buy.

So, here’s what I’m planning or have already ordered:

    BMW i8 12V Battery Replacement

I’ve yet to confirm if the 12V battery has been replaced in its 10 years on the road, so it needs checking and replacing if necessary. Some i8 owners report that an older 12V battery can drain the car’s electric motor battery, so this could be a worthwhile upgrade. Estimated cost: £250+

    LED Light Strip Fix

The BMW i8 comes with an interior lighting package, which allows for customisable colours. I currently have mine set to blue (because, well, I like blue), but the driver’s door strip isn’t working. It’s not a fuse issue, so it could be a loose connection. Unknown cost to investigate and fix.

    HEL Performance Brake Lines

I installed upgraded brake lines on my Mini Clubman, and the braking improvement was instantly noticeable—not just for track use but for everyday driving. The BMW i8 should benefit in the same way. HEL Performance brake line kit ordered: £127.04 (excluding fitting).

    Powerflex Bushes

When I downsized the wheels on my Mini Clubman, the handling felt lighter. Upgrading to Powerflex bushes made a significant difference, so I’m keen to try the same on the i8. Many owners suggest upgrading to wider tyres, but I’m hoping that better bushes will help for now. Ordered from AReeve Performance: £134.89 (including shipping and discount).

    Spark Plugs Replacement

Going through the service history, it looks like the spark plugs haven’t been changed in years. I opted for NGK plugs from BuyCarParts.co.uk. Cost: £83.69 + £8.45 delivery.

    Air Filter Upgrade

Earlier this month, I took the initiative to replace and upgrade the panel air filter in the BMW i8. It’s a simple yet effective upgrade, and I even installed it myself. You can check out the full step-by-step guide here – link. This upgrade set me back £60.

    Spoiler Upgrade

I’ve been debating whether to get the AC Schnitzer spoiler for the BMW i8, but at £2,000, it’s a hefty price tag for something I’m unsure about. Instead, I went against my better judgment (again) and ordered a carbon fibre spoiler from AliExpress. I saw a YouTube video featuring one, and it looked decent—so let’s see if I get lucky this time. Fingers crossed and price is a secret!

    Exhaust Upgrade

Like many BMW i8 owners, I’ve fallen into the trap of trying to improve its sound. After watching countless videos, I decided on the QuickSilver Sound Architect exhaust system. Rather than talk about it too much now, including price, I’ll wait until it’s delivered and installed before sharing my thoughts.

    What’s Booked and What’s Next?

    • Battery check and possible replacement: Scheduled for February.
    • LED light strip investigation: Will be checked alongside the battery.

Beyond that, I’ll likely tackle the brake lines, bushes, and spark plugs next.

    Wishlist – Future Upgrades

    1. Carbon Fibre Wrap (Replacing the Blue Trim)

I never thought I’d consider wrapping the BMW i8’s blue accents, but after seeing what others have done, it’s tempting. I might have a chat with Daoud (@ThatSignGuyUK) about it—though he’ll probably freak.

    2. Steering Wheel Upgrade

I’ve been on the verge of ordering a full Alcantara steering wheel with a blue centre stripe and carbon fibre shift paddles. Finding one for the i8 has been tricky, though. Initially, I wanted something similar to my Mini’s carbon wheel, but I’ve learned my lesson there. Perhaps I’ll write a future blog on going too far with mods.

    3. Android Auto / Apple CarPlay

Initially, this felt like an essential upgrade, but it has slipped down the priority list for now.

    Final Thoughts

At 700 miles in and five weeks of ownership, I’ve already lined up a lot of work to get the BMW i8 summer-ready. Oh, and I nearly forgot—I’ve ordered some car mats.

Have I missed anything? Let me know your thoughts!
