One of the things I love most as a dad is encouraging my daughter to step out of her comfort zone and try something new. It’s one of those things that, as a parent, you know will help her grow—whether it’s teaching her to ride her bike (which is still one of my all-time favourite memories), climbing that intimidatingly high climbing frame, or braving her first rollercoaster. This time, the challenge was go-karting.
I hadn’t been behind the wheel of a go-kart in over a decade when we found ourselves at the TeamSport Cardiff track. It wasn’t just a random weekend decision—it was actually for my nephew’s birthday. But the excitement of the day grew even more when my daughter, having only just met the age (minimum 8 years) and leg-length requirements, was ready to give karting a try.
I could tell she was nervous, and to be honest, so was I. While she’d mastered the art of riding a bicycle, go-karting was a whole different beast—faster, more unpredictable, and definitely something new for her. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned through all our adventures, it’s that she often surprises me when she’s faced with a challenge.

We usually pay around £43 per person, and booking online also secures a time slot that suits. After booking, you’ll receive a link to fill in driver details—definitely worth doing in advance to save time on the day.
The whole process when you arrive is straightforward. Bring your booking confirmation, and if you don’t own a racing balaclava or gloves, you can purchase them at the venue. A quick tip: their gloves are pretty basic, so if you have cycling gloves at home, bring those along. Once booked in, we were handed our race suits and wristbands, which correspond to your session time.
As race time approached, we sat through the all-important safety briefing, which helped calm some of those pre-race jitters. For the under-12s, like my daughter, extra safety pads were fitted along with the helmet, ensuring she was well protected.
The beauty of the family session is that it allows racers of all ages and skill levels to hit the track together. For us, it was an opportunity to share a new experience, where the focus was on having fun rather than who came first. After all, it’s not every day you get to line up on a race track with your daughter!
Our session included two 15-minute races, with a break in between where we could review our lap times. My daughter might have been nervous at first, but by the time the first session was over, she was grinning from ear to ear. The Karting Bug: Racing as a Family
And that’s not all. Since that first exhilarating race, we’ve been back to the track many times. Whether it’s been for my birthday, where we went all-out and booked the entire session for the whole family, or just on a random Friday evening after school, karting has become one of our go-to activities. Every time we head back to Teamsport, the excitement kicks in. It’s like a tradition now—we suit up, put on our helmets, and mentally prepare for another round of competitive racing.
At the start of each session, we’re always fierce competitors. Who will win this time? My daughter is always determined, vowing that this time she’ll take the lead. But inevitably, by the second lap or so, we turn into teammates. While I’m busy trying to out-race the other parents, she’s laser-focused on topping the leaderboard for the kids.
Don’t get me wrong—we still have our moments of rivalry on the track. Even though the adults have slightly faster go-karts, she somehow manages to make overtaking a real challenge. There have been so many moments when we lock eyes as we hit the corners, both pushing our karts to the limit. It’s these moments—the split-second decisions, the near misses, and the shared excitement—that make karting with her such an incredible experience. We always finish the session and chat for hours afterwards about our experiences.
And if someone bumps into either of us (which, by the way, is against the rules), they’d better watch out. In those moments, it’s like we’re in a real-life version of “Shake ‘n Bake”—backing each other up, protecting our positions, and keeping an eye out for the other.
Each race is a new adventure, and every time we step off the track, I’m reminded of how lucky I am to share these experiences with her. It’s not just about racing; it’s about building memories, pushing each other to be better, and most importantly, having fun.
