If you’re driving through North Wales and looking for the ideal place to take a break, Betws-y-Coed should be high on your list. Nestled in the stunning Conwy Valley and right on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, this picturesque village is more than just a stopover—it’s a destination in itself.

    The Gateway to Snowdonia

Betws-y-Coed isn’t just another pretty Welsh village; it’s a hub of activity and a natural gateway to Snowdonia. Whether you’re passing through on a road trip or seeking a place to stay for the night, the village offers something for everyone.

    Betws-y-Coed

Set within the Gwydir Forest, it boasts a prime location at the boundary of Caernarfonshire and Denbighshire. With its breathtaking scenery, excellent accommodation options, and abundance of outdoor activities, it’s easy to see why Betws-y-Coed is one of the most popular visitor destinations in the area.

    Things to Do in Betws-y-Coed

    • Outdoor Adventures: Whether you’re into mountain biking, hiking, or even a round of golf, there’s no shortage of outdoor pursuits to enjoy.
    • Scenic Drives: If you’re a driving enthusiast, the roads surrounding Betws-y-Coed provide some of the best scenic routes in Wales. Check out our review of the B4391 (link here) for an epic drive through the region. You can also explore our curated version of the Evo Triangle with a detailed map (link here).
    • Local Attractions: The village has a wealth of attractions, including picturesque waterfalls, charming independent shops, and excellent dining options.

Where to Stay: The Royal Oak Hotel

On our visit to Betws-y-Coed, we stayed at the Royal Oak Hotel, a historic and highly-rated accommodation in the heart of the village.

What We Loved About the Royal Oak:

    Royal Oak Hotel, Betws-y-Coed
    • Spacious and Comfortable Rooms: We opted for a Superior Double to accommodate a cot bed, which was kindly provided by the hotel.

    • Charming Atmosphere: The hotel’s blend of old-world charm and modern ironwork decor creates a cosy, rustic feel.

    • Excellent Dining Options: Choose from The Grill Room for a more formal dining experience or Y Stablau (Stables Bar) for a relaxed outdoor setting.

    • Good Parking Facilities: The hotel offers guest parking (free with a pass from reception), with additional pay-and-display spaces nearby. It can get busy during the day but tends to clear out by the evening.

    • Hearty Breakfast: Included in our stay (£190), breakfast is served from 7:30 am to 9:45 am, offering both continental and cooked options.
    • Leisure Facilities: Guests can access the swimming pool and gym at the nearby Waterloo Hotel (just a five-minute walk away). No booking is required, though waiting times may occur during peak periods.
    • Smooth Check-in/Check-out: Check-in is from 3 pm, and check-out is at 11 am—ideal for a relaxed stay.

One thing to note is that the hotel does not have a lift, and as it’s an older building, the creaky floorboards add to its character rather than being a nuisance.

Whether you’re stopping for a short break or looking for an overnight stay, Betws-y-Coed is more than just a convenient pit stop—it’s an experience. With scenic roads, plenty of activities, and welcoming accommodation, it’s a must-visit for anyone exploring North Wales.
