Naming a baby is no easy feat. It’s such a personal choice and one that’s often layered with expectations, traditions, and dreams of what this little person might grow up to be. For us, it’s been a journey of finding a name that not only honours our love for cars and motorsport but also feels personal and rooted in family legacy—particularly with a nod to my father.
The Challenge of Choosing the Right Name
Names are such a big decision, especially when considering a tribute to a loved one. My father, Stephen Gregory, was a significant figure in my life, and we want a name that captures some of that love and connection. But balancing the desire to honour family with finding a unique name that also stands out is challenging! We want something meaningful, memorable, and ideally something that might tie into our love of cars and racing.
Additionally, there’s the trend factor to consider. While it’s tempting to go with a popular name, we’re also hoping to find something a bit distinctive.
Trending Baby Boy Names for 2024
Many parents these days lean towards strong, timeless names, with some retro throwbacks making a comeback. Names like Arthur, Theodore, and Oscar are growing in popularity. In the motoring world, names inspired by car brands like Bentley, Austin, and even Romeo (hello, Alfa fans!) are all catching on.
But there’s also a rise in short, punchy names—Finn, Leo, and Max—which feel modern but classic.
Racing-Inspired Baby Boy Names
For a petrolhead, there’s no shortage of names that pay tribute to racing legends. Here are some we’ve considered (or simply admire) inspired by famous drivers and motorsport icons:
- Ayrton – Named after Ayrton Senna, the legendary Brazilian F1 driver. It’s a unique choice and pays homage to a true icon.
- Lewis – A strong name and, of course, a nod to Lewis Hamilton. It’s familiar yet sophisticated and comes with a sense of British pride.
- Enzo – After Enzo Ferrari, founder of Ferrari. It’s a great Italian name that also means “ruler of the household”—a fitting name for a little one, don’t you think?
- Jenson – Named after Jenson Button, the 2009 F1 World Champion. It’s a slightly different twist on the more common “Jenson” or “Jensen,” yet with a racing flair.
- Graham – In honour of Graham Hill, the British racer and one of the few to achieve the motorsport “Triple Crown.” It’s a classic British name, which has vintage appeal.
- Sebastian – Inspired by Sebastian Vettel, a four-time F1 World Champion. It’s a well-known name, yet feels refined and international.
- Clark – Named after Jim Clark, a talented and beloved British racing driver. Simple, strong, and somewhat underused.

Beyond racing, we’re also looking at names that could reflect my father’s legacy and family connections. Using family names can be a beautiful way to keep someone’s memory alive, and it would mean a lot to share that bond with our son. However, finding the right fit with a name that resonates with both of us adds another layer of complexity.

As we sift through options, we’re trying to strike the right balance. We want a name that honours our family, our passions, and hopefully offers our son a bit of inspiration from the racing world we love so much. The pressure is on, but I think we’re getting closer.
