Is Amazon Autos the Start of a New Era in Car Shopping?

Amazon has taken a bold step into the automotive world with the launch of ‘Amazon Autos,’ a platform that allows customers in 48 U.S. cities to purchase new Hyundai vehicles entirely online. It’s a move that promises to bring the simplicity of Amazon shopping to what is often a lengthy and stressful process—buying a car.

Can you imagine being able to buy a car from Amazon? Just like adding a pair of trainers or the latest tech gadget to your basket, you can now shop for a Hyundai, complete the paperwork, and arrange pick-up, all with a few clicks. It’s a concept that feels almost futuristic, yet here it is, a reality.

This news instantly reminded me of my own experience buying a car online during the Covid pandemic. Back then, everything was locked down, and visiting dealerships wasn’t an option. I bought a car unseen, completed the paperwork online, and before I knew it, it was parked on my driveway. The whole process was so seamless I can barely recall even speaking to the garage. At the time, it felt revolutionary—now Amazon is taking that concept to the next level.

With Amazon Autos, customers can browse available vehicles by make, model, trim, and even specific features like colour and tech options. There’s an option to get an instant valuation for your trade-in vehicle, view upfront pricing, secure financing, and complete the checkout process entirely online. Once everything’s sorted, you simply schedule a time to pick up your car at the dealership. All of this is done through Amazon’s familiar shopping interface, which is designed to make the process as simple and user-friendly as possible.

It will be fascinating to see where this goes. Could this be just the beginning? Imagine if the used car market adopted a similar model, with door-to-door deliveries integrated into the system. You could trade in your old car, buy a new one, and have it delivered to your doorstep, all without stepping out of your home. For a petrolhead like me, the sheer convenience (and temptation) of that idea is almost dangerous!

Amazon is currently only working with Hyundai, but they’ve hinted at plans to expand this offering to include other car brands and cities in the future. It’s a smart move for both Amazon and the dealerships involved. For dealers, it’s an opportunity to connect with Amazon’s massive customer base and streamline their sales process. By taking care of the initial browsing and paperwork online, dealerships can focus on delivering a more personal experience when customers pick up their new vehicles.

As someone who’s passionate about cars, I can’t help but wonder how this might change the industry. Will it make buying a car more accessible and appealing to those who find the traditional dealership experience intimidating? Or will it take away some of the excitement of test drives and showroom visits? Only time will tell, but one thing is clear—Amazon is determined to shake things up.

For now, Amazon Autos is available in select cities, but it’s easy to see how this concept could gain traction. In a world where we already buy everything from groceries to furniture online, why not cars? It’s an intriguing development and one that I’ll be keeping a close eye on. Who knows? Maybe one day I’ll be writing about my own Amazon car-buying experience.
